Sculptor Phyllis Hamilton chisels the plaster sculpt at the Highland Mint in Melbourne.  This is the first phase in making the coin.This is the head side of the 9 inch plaster sculpt. This side is reused every year.  They add the team logos on the helmets 2-3 weeks before the Superbowl.This is the tail side of the 9 inch plaster sculpt. This side carries the Superbowl logo designed each year. It includes the date and location.The art department at Highland Mint in Melbourne not only designs the coin, they also work on the artwork that comes with the coin.  You can see some of their works on the wall.This is the reducing machine. The 9-inch plaster sculpt goes in the wheel on the right.  It takes 24 hours for the machine to cut the design from the plaster to the metal die seen in the next picture.This is the metal die that all the coins are minted from.  It is 1 1/2 inches, the exact size of the coin.FOX 35 photographer Omar Isaac films workers in the polishing room.One of the workers drops blank coins into the polisher.  They have to be scratch free and shiny before striking.Here a worker loads polished blank coins into the striking machine.The machine strikes the top and bottom of the coin at the same time.FOX 35 photograher Omar Isaac filming newly minted Superbowl XLII coins coming off the striker.The company mints numerous commemorative coins including the NHL, NBA, MLB, and Disney.These are the bronze version of the Superbowl coin.The coins coming off the conveyor belt of the striker ready to be sent to a company in Rhode Island where they get their gold highlites.The coins come back the the Highland Mint where they are numbered and packaged with a certificate of authenticity.The finsihed product, "head side". This is the only product that the NFL permits use of the Vince Lombardi trophy on.The finsihed product, "tail side".   They are making 10,000 limited edition Superbowl XLII coins. The first one stamped with #1, is the one you'll see used in the coin toss.  It then goes to the Hall of Fame in Canon, Ohio.
